WHAT'S NEW AT QUAKERDALE

QUAKERDALE'S TEAM F.U.N. TO ATTEND EVENING WITH CHAMPIONSQUAKERDALE'S TEAM F.U.N. TO ATTEND EVENING WITH CHAMPIONS
Quakerdale's Team F.U.N. (Fundamentals U Need), a program of Kurt Warner's First Things First foundation, will be special guests for "An Evening With Champions," May 25, at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids. We are thrilled that Team F.U.N. will be part of this event, which will feature Cedar Rapids natives Kurt Warner and Zach Johnson, 2007 Masters Champion. It's sure to be an inspirational evening as these two men share their improbable stories of determination and faith on the road to becoming Champions.

First Things First made Quakerdale of Waterloo a Team F.U.N. partner in 2006. The program empowers young people by teaching monthly lessons based on healthy living. Membership on the 'team' requires that youth fulfill attendance, grade and behavior requirements.

"An Evening With Champions" is open to the public, and tickets are available at the Paramount box office and Ticketmaster.com, or by visiting www.kurtwarner.org, or by calling 877-FIRST-13.

$.5 MILLION GIFT STARTS ENDOWMENT FOR BUD PEARSON PROMISE HOME$.5 MILLION GIFT STARTS ENDOWMENT FOR BUD PEARSON PROMISE HOME
Okoboji businessman and philanthropist Gerald “Bud” Pearson has given Quakerdale a half million dollars to establish the Bud Pearson Promise Home.

“Mr. Pearson believes in the concept of a privately funded, non-correctional, faith-driven living opportunity for children who need a chance in life,” said Robert Talbot, executive director at Quakerdale. “His generous gift allows us to begin building an endowment that will fund a Promise Home forever, which is the essence of the Promise Program.”

Pearson founded Spencer Foods and built the beef packing operation into a Fortune 500 company in the 1970s. In 1988, he started World Champions of Golf, which produces corporate outings with senior golf professionals and donates proceeds to children’s charities. It was through the golf company’s relationship with the Lennox/Quakerdale Invitational Pro-Am Golf Tournament that Pearson first embraced Quakerdale’s work with children and families.

“I was impressed with Quakerdale’s leadership and their dedication to their mission,” Pearson said. “Their results are amazing. I know of no other charity as worthy of the support.”

The Bud Pearson Promise Home will be the second of its kind for Quakerdale. Cost for the new project is estimated at $4.5 million. In 2006, Quakerdale established the Rena Van Orman Promise Home in Marshalltown for the voluntary, long term placement of youths whose potential are hampered by economic conditions, adverse family issues or other factors.

MEET ROB TALBOT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MEET ROB TALBOT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Robert Talbot became Executive Director of Quakerdale in January of 2008. His appointment marks only the third leadership change at Quakerdale in the past 44 years. Previous Executive Directors M. Richard Whitehead and Michelle Herman retired after serving for 26 and 18 years, respectively.

Talbot was most recently Interim Executive Director of Triple L Youth Ranch, a department of Family Connection, Inc., in Anderson, Ind. “Rob’s career in human services as resident counselor, family counselor, program developer, supervisor, vice president of operations, and president/CEO in organizations in Indiana and Illinois, encompasses the experience we were seeking for the organization’s next leader,” said Steve Heilskov, Board President.

INVEST IN QUAKERDALE'S CARING FOR CHILDRENINVEST IN QUAKERDALE'S CARING FOR CHILDREN
Sarah has shown her teachers a great deal of promise, but her homework has been erratic and often negelected. At 12 years of age, she's begun to be pulled by the allure of distractions beyond school. Sarah's mom is a single-parent who works hard and struggles to provide a living for the family. Mom often is just too stretched, stressed or tired to provide Sarah the attention, guidance, discipline or tutoring she needs to approach her potential.

Billy is 11 years old. He doesn't go home at night, if he can help it, until after 10:00 p.m. and it's quiet in the house. Billy doesn't consider home a safe place to be.

Do you want to help Sarah, Billy and others like them? Would you like to LEAD the way in providing a privately-funded, Christian home for children? Do you have the DESIRE and ABILITY to a be significant partner?

To be part of the solution, contact Donna J. Lawler, Quakerdale Development Director, by emailing her or by calling 641.497.5294. There is also more information available through the left side menu at "Caring For The Forgotten Child" and at the new "PROMISE PROGRAM."

CONSIDER a GIFT ANNUITY: a WIN-WIN SITUATION for QUAKERDALE and for YOU!

Our gift annuity is an agreement between an individual and Quakerdale that transfers cash or other property to Quakerdale. In return, Quakerdale PAYS a FIXED AMOUNT ANNUALLY to the DONOR(S) FOR LIFE! The annuity amount is determined by the age(s) of the donor(s) at the time of transfer and the value of the asset transferred. At the death of the annuitant(s), the principal remaining goes to Quakerdale's Endowment Fund.

Donors enjoy: 1) a charitble deduction in the year the transfer was made, 2) a steady income for life which is partially tax-free for a period of years, 3) the reporting of capital gains over the donor's life expectancy for a transfer of appreciated property, and 4) the joy of making a major contribution to Quakerdale's ministry to youth and families in need.

Here is a sample of current rates for Quakerdale's single life gift annuities:
Age Rate
70 6.5%
75 7.1%
80 8.0%
85 9.5%

Note: Gift Annuity Agreements can also be designed to pay through out the length of two lives.

To take advantage of a GIFT ANNUITY, contact Donna J. Lawler, by emailing her or by calling 641.497.5294

YOUR GIFTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD!!YOUR GIFTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD!!
Once upon a time we were all given a world. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours, and it was the only one we were given.

Some people decided that the best world to live in was their own little world, where each person was responsible for what was his. Fortunately, a great many other people saw a completely different world. To them the world was much larger than themselves. And because they opened wide their heart and eyes, they saw things imperfect, yet beautiful, that others didn’t see. And they reached out.

These people saw Jennifer, a runaway teen living homeless on a city street, and they sheltered her. They witnessed the struggles of David who was entrapped by drug and alcohol addiction, and they searched for ways to end those strongholds.

They heard the cries of Sue who was being sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend, and they rescued her. They felt the pain of Bobby who was scorned and ignored by society for being different. They embraced him as “special.”

They knew a neighborhood family who needed help with parenting, and they helped them build on their strengths while preserving their dignity.

They saw. They acted. They changed the world. And all our lives are richer, thanks to them.

We ask you to take a moment to THINK ABOUT REACHING OUT and CHANGING YOUR WORLD. You could be a healer and helper… a caretaker and change-maker… a dreamer and doer. YOU could be a HERO!

For more than 154 years, Quakerdale has been serving children and families in Iowa. Would you financially support Quakerdale as the instrument to turn your desire of reaching out to others - especially hurting children - into a reality?

Right now, Quakerdale and other agencies like us are facing unbelievable cuts in referrals and in funding because of the state’s budget restrictions. Iowa’s troubled, hurting, and abandoned children and families need us …and we need YOU!

As you count your blessings, please reach out and share $25, $50, $100 or even more to make a difference in the lives of children and families.

Through your donation to our work at Quakerdale, you can truly make a better world, one person at a time.
