Promise Academy Student Discusses Recent Leadership Experience

Promise Academy Student Quinn enjoys leadership experience

Quakerdale Promise Academy Student, Quinn Gutshall (age 17) discusses his recent experience at Business Horizon’s Camp.

Business Horizons is… “A week-long, hands-on, action-oriented, live-in summer program for high school students who want to learn about what the future holds for them in the business world.”

The camp was held at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa from July 24 – July 28th.

Tell us a little bit about the week…

The camp started out with a couple of icebreakers and we met various business professionals who talked about their careers and experiences.  I was able to meet like-minded teens, make new friends, and work on a fun group project.  I was in a team of 12 people and we had to create our own product, business proposal, advertisement, and presented it to the camp on Thursday.

 What was your product?

The Green Machine, which received 2nd place.  It is a machine that utilizes three different sources of energy (water, solar, and wind) to provide your house with electricity and heating/cooling. In three years you will see your household expenses decrease significantly.

 What did you enjoy most?

I really enjoyed meeting the business professionals!  I talked to ABI representatives about my interests, did some networking, and I even received 20 business cards.  I am thankful that the Promise Academy provides students with leadership experiences like this.

What careers do you see yourself pursuing in the future?

I am keeping my options open, but right now I’m interested in going into non-profit development, I.T., or psychology.
