On Saturday, June 11, from 10 AM - 2 PM we will be holding our first Sibshop at the Waterloo Campus for children ages 8-13. Cost: $20.00 per child which includes lunch.
Sibshops are opportunities for brothers and sisters of children with special health and developmental needs to obtain peer support and education through a fun and hands-on context. They are lively celebrations of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special needs. Let's face it, being a sib of a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a not-so good thing, and for many somewhere in the middle. The model provides interactive discussion and is fun and rewarding for those that participate and host them!
Goals:
· To provide siblings of children with special needs an opportunity to meet other siblings in a relaxed context.
· To provide siblings with opportunities to discuss the joys and difficulties with other siblings of children with special needs.
· To provide an opportunity to learn how others handle situations commonly experienced by other siblings of children with special needs.
· To provide siblings with an opportunity to learn more about the implications of their sibling's special needs.
· To provide parents and other professionals opportunities to learn more about the concerns and opportunities frequently experienced by brothers and sisters of people with special needs.
Sibshops will be offered on the second Saturday of each month from 10 AM - 2 PM at the Waterloo campus. This allows time for games, discussion, informational activities, and making and eating lunch!
