(New Providence, Iowa, May 2, 2011) - Over 80 members from the Hardin County community filled the Broer Center at the Quakerdale of New Providence Campus on Wednesday, April 27 for the First Annual Promise Academy Recognition/Awards Banquet.
The Promise Academy, which is home to Iowa’s first prep-basketball program, is a new and privately funded initiative for the organization. Students and student-athletes attend voluntarily and are offered a strong foundation for character, leadership, education, and spiritual growth through a host of enriching programs.
The evening began with a silent auction. After the meal Quakerdale Executive Director, Robert Talbot introduced the agency’s new vision and mission, academic seal, and addressed Quakerdale’s new direction with the Promise Academy.
“We won’t stop serving the needs of individuals through our traditional services. The Promise Academy is just another way in which we can meet the needs of families and youth that are unable to get assistance from the state or lack the funds to get private support,” said Talbot.
The program culminated with awards that were presented to honor the special achievements of five Promise Academy students/athletes. Nathan Freeman received the Academic Achievement Award. Tyler Washington was the recipient of the Coaches Award. Student-athlete Mario Redmond received the Leadership Award. Promise Academy student, Jasani Whitehead, received the Servant Hood award, and the MVP award was presented to Chris Oliveria.
The banquet raised $1220.00 in funds to support the Academy. Talbot concluded by attributing the success of the Promise Academy’s first year to “dedicated staff, sponsors, volunteers, donors, and a supportive community.”
