Quakerdale Continues to Provide Care to Jasper County
Regardless of Youth Shelter Closing in March
Newton, IA - February marks the final month of Quakerdale's Newton youth shelter. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors announced that the property had been sold in August of 2010. On November 18, 2010, after an extensive search to locate another viable location for the shelter program, Executive Director, Robert Talbot informed the public that the shelter would officially be closing its' doors on March 1, 2011.
"We may be in our final month at the shelter, but will faithfully continue to serve the community of Newton and Jasper County with our "in-home" counseling and skill building services," said Talbot.
The Newton shelter has been a safe haven for youth in need of care since the late '70s. In 2010, the shelter provided housing to 113 children.
"Last year we were proud to serve 84 families with our in home programs in Jasper County and are looking forward to assisting more in the days ahead, especially since we will be lacking a shelter in the area. Our "in home" and community based services are flexible and designed around each family with a focus of helping people live the healthy and productive lives they desire," said Director of Family Services, Beth Andrew.
Quakerdale has provided a broad continuum of programs and services to meet the needs of young people and their families for 160 years. When Quakerdale's Newton youth shelter closes on March 1st, the organization will continue providing clinical assessments at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 223 E. 4th St., Newton, Iowa.
