Quakerdale Introduces New Athletic Academy Program & Basketball Director Stan Hughes
“Quakerdale is an open opportunity to build something special.”- Stan Hughes
A native of the Washington DC area, Stan Hughes has been playing and coaching basketball for over 15 years. After attending Bowie State University and Sullivan University in Louisville, KY. He received his Degree in Business Administration, but found his real passion is to assist young adults in finding opportunities through basketball.
“My ultimate goal is to change my kids from boys into young men,” Hughes says.
Hughes played semi pro basketball for the Outlaws under the direction of Coach Roger Clark. He began coaching Little League and worked his way up the ranks to serve as the Director of Basketball Operations in the ABA (Kentucky Reach). Later, Coach Hughes developed players academically as well as on the court as Assistant Coach at Shawnee High School.
One of Coach Hughes' greatest accomplishments was coaching the Simmons College men’s basketball team. Simmons, a two-year school founded in 1879 as Kentucky’s first African-American college, had no athletics in nearly 80 years. During his career at Simmons, Hughes led the Panthers to a total record of 127-29. Coach Hughes also coached the DC Assault AAU Program and worked with players including Nolan Smith, (Duke Univ.), Mike Beasley (Miami Heat), Chris Wright, and Moses Ibraham (Georgetown Univ.).
“With Quakerdale’s new athletics program the organization will be able to broaden its continuum of services and provide more hope for Iowa youth and their families,” says Hughes.
